The total number of apartments in Germany is around 39 million. Of these, roughly 24 million apartments are rented. Real estate, and specifically residential property, therefore represents one of the key economic sectors in Germany. For this reason, the fact that the real estate industry under the auspices of the BDI is finally forming a body that can represent the interests of all those involved, the German Property Federation (ZIA), is a welcome move.
Moreover, an apartment in Germany is not just an economic asset, but also a social one. Apartments are more than mere "bricks and mortar". They are "homes" and, as such, act as the most emotionally significant centre of people's everyday lives. GSW is aware of this responsibility and therefore promotes the principles of fairness, transparency and education in the German real estate sector. It is also actively involved in discussions on housing policy.
